Meaning
- land cave
Usage
Commonly used word.
Word type
Land caves are caves of which at least one entrance is above sea level, or of which more than one entrance is partially above sea level and ascending.
Usage notes
This word is rumoured to be related to a human word for cave: grotte (Norwegian), grot (Dutch) or grotta (Swedish). However, this is rather unlikely, as the Slovakian and Polish words are not remotely similar to this word, and the areas in which the grot*-languages are spoken do not have a lot of caves compared to other European countries.
